For the past 6 months some old college buddies and me have been working very hard on comics. Now I'm proud to announce that we are finally finished and ready to sell our first books. Below you are looking at the first two publications from our aptly named publishing group: Old College Comics. Freshmen Fifteen (yes, FreshMEN) is a graphic anthology of 15 stories. I had the pleasure of illustrating the cover and one of the stories inside, I also worked as Art Director (which was an amazing experience). All the stories are 10 pages long and they are full of action and suspense. AfterMan, is an original super hero story written by my friends Mike and Joe. They asked me to do the variant special edition Long Beach Comic Con Cover, which is what you see below. Sorry I do not have a picture of the normal cover.
So far my experience drawing comics has been a roller coaster ride. Drawing sequential stories can be a real challenge, but I really enjoy it. I get a big charge out of drawing comics and I plan on doing a lot more because I feel like I've learned a lot. It's funny, in high school I used to draw comics all the time on lined paper. In college I moved away from comics and experimented with other types of fine art. Yet, now that I have "grown up" and was lucky enough to have an opportunity to produce a book with a talented group of friends I have rediscovered a passion. With any luck I will be able to produce more books.
I am thankful for the support I've gotten from my girlfriend Nicole, her father George Coriaty, and his printing business Sir Speedy in Whittier for making this possible. I am also thankful for all the help from friends near and far.
If you're interested in getting your own copy of the Freshmen Fifteen, or Afterman you can pick one up at the Long Beach Comic Con this weekend. Or you can grab one at Pulp Fiction comic shop in Long Beach. Or you can wait a few weeks and download a digital copy. Check out oldcollegecomics.com for updates.
